Why do people think that ALL hispanics have olive skin, brown hair and brown eyes?

Last night, I was talking to my friend on the phone. I told her that my cousin form Mexico was coming to the U.S. for my mom's birthday. (She only coming for a visit LEGALLY.) Anyways, my friend was thrilled to get to know her. (She's African American.) So I describe my cousin's appearance. I told her she has naturally red hair and blue eyes. My friend did not believe me. I swear she looks like that!! Why do people stereotype the appearance of someone's race?

because of stereotypes and ignorance. the media, etc... most mexicans are dark and short. that's what the media has showed us and that is what you see in most of the migrators from mexico. if people would open a book and read for themselves instead of waiting on schools to teach them something, they would discover a whole new world, but most are not willing to open their minds. most mexicans speak spanish because once upon a time the spainards invaded mexico. what a lof of people fail to realize is that native america country was or is north and south america. for some reason when people say mexican, they don't comprehend that they are native indians of mexico. the europeans invaded north and south american people who are native indians. the spainards were in most south american and carribean islands which is also considered north america (for those who think that only canada and the us is north america-) then you have the other europeans of N.america who invaded which speak english. blacks of the US aren't the only ones who ended up being of mixed race because of the europeans. slavery, rape, etc.... therefore yes, your cousin of mexican descent can look white, because of the gene theory. i am cuban. i look black. i am mixed with african (the slaves that were brought to cuba;no the usa is not the only country who received slaves. as a matter of fact, more slaves were taken to the carribean and south america, than the usa. i am mixed with chinese; yes there were asian slaves too. i am mixed with indian; the native indians that were in cuba when the spainards came in and also made them slaves; that is the ones that they could catch who didn't get a chance to run to the mountains) hence, all cubans don't look like rickey ricardo, who will proudly let you know about his african heritage; you may have heard the song, "babaloo". he's not just banging on a drum to entertain the white man. he's talking about an nigerian god and the white man didn't have a clue... lol.....so spanish people, who are all mixed have the native indian blood, because they were the original people there, then you have the spainards who couldn't leave well enough alone and began race mixing with the native indians. then when they felt like conquering land, they needed bodies, hence slavery from africa; then there's the chinese, the eastern indian and other races who came looking for refuge from their land, but ended up in slavery or indentured servants once they got to the

Americas. i can get long winded so i will stop now; there is just so much to history that people aren't willing to explore. reading is fundamental people. something else that a lot of people don't know is that there are blacks in mexico. a lot of blacks were slaves that the spainards brought into mexico. also when a lot of the slaves from the usa ran away, they seeked refuge in mexico and refuge with the native indians of the usa, hence blackfoot indian, etc.... did i give you more than you bargained for? this message was really for the closed minded people of the USA/ also, although slavery was a terrible thing, the slaves in the USA were treated more inhumane than the slaves of central, carribean and south america. remember most spainards came to america looking for forturne, therefore having women on ships were very few; can u imagine what they were there for, vs the other europeans who brought their families. one group of europeans were looking for treasure, the other europeans were looking for refuge. the spanairds mixed the race with out shame, (Most were single, no family) vs the married european of the USA who snuck around to get what he wanted from the native indian and black slave, and other groups that were here

People do it because they are closed minded. Its also easier for them to clump people together in one group and say they all look like this and they all do this, etc.

Not everyone will look the same, when they come from a certain race. There is such a thing called recessive genes people.

Most uninformed people are not aware that Mexico is a melting pot similar to the U.S. and is home to many of the world's immigrants who become Mexican citizens.

'Cause ever since Ricky Martin cam out and them Chicano sterotyped movies in the 90's, that's all Americans think about when the word "Latino" pops up. They don't know that Latinos are just as multiracial as the nation of Canada or America. They're white, black, asian, native and mixed latinos. I'm talking about the Western latinos not porkchops and italians. Portugese, spanish and itlaians are the "real" latinos. But whatever.. hispanic, latino, whatever word you use, it's a multiracial group of people sharing one thing in common: romantic language (s).

i dont know but NOT all mexicans look like that i mean look at dulce maria shes drop dead gorgeous and most of my friends didnt believe she was mexican, and alott of my aunts from mexico [because im mexican] dont look like your average mexican woman. and soooo many people think im 100% italian and im like 30% they say i dont look mexican at all.so people need to stop sterotyping because its gayy!

Well, I think the problem here is not that Americans stereotypes about the appearances of certain races, because in fact people from certain races have all the same appearance. You won't find red-heads in Subsaarian African (in the aboriginal population) or in Japan.

The problem is that Americans like you don't realise that other countries like Mexico are multiracial too.

And when someones tell that, like some of the previous answers, they recieve bad thumbs.
